Animal Husbandry

Animal Husbandry in action.

Animal Husbandry is a gameplay feature in Green Hell added during the animal husbandry update V.2.3.0.

Gameplay[]

Animal husbandry is the breeding and caring of animals. The player will need to provide the animals with living quarters, as well as food and water sources. There is a number of of different animal species that can be kept by the player. In general most mammals: capybara, peccary, tapir, anteater, armadillo, three banded armadillo.

The player can also keep live bees, for more information see Beehive.

Capturing Wild Animals[]

To capture an animal the player will need to safely sedate them. This can be done by using the bamboo blowpipe and poison darts. Only one dart will be needed per animal. After locating a suitable animal, the player will need to aim with the blowpipe and shoot a poison dart at it. The animal will run away, however it won't get very far before it slows down and passes out. The player can now tie up the animal with rope by looking directly at the animal while pressing and holding down the E key. Now the animal is ready to be picked up and carried to its new living quarters.

An animal that passes out in deep or shallow water when sedated will drown and die. If harvested, the animal will provide spoiled meat due to the toxins from the poison dart. It is advised to try and steer the animal away from water before sedating to avoid accidental death.

The player will be able to tell the gender of the animal by the icon it displays when sedated. If the player wishes to capture a different gender they can leave the animal on the ground, where it will naturally wake up after a short time.

Alternatively, the snare trap can be used as another method to catch living animals. Once it catches an animal, the player is able to carry the animal to the animal pen and untie it.

Living Quarters[]

In order to house animals, the player will need build the animal pen. The blueprint for the pen can be unlocked by crafting a bamboo blowpipe. Once the pen has been built, the player can place down feeding and water troughs. To place the animal in the pen, the player will need to carry the animal and drop it inside of the pen. The player can then release the animal from the rope that binds it by looking at the animal and selecting 'untie' from the menu.

The player will need to make sure the gate of the pen is kept closed, failing to do so will cause your animal to venture out of the pen and return to the wild.

Taming Animals[]

If the player successfully cares and feeds their animals, they will begin to gain its trust. At 50% trust the player will be able to pet the animal by looking at it head on and selecting pet by pressing E key. A short animation will play showing the player petting it. the player can also name their pet at 50%.Petting animals will help increase the animals trust and provide the player with a +10 sanity boost.

At 80% trust, the player will now be able to whistle to call the animal. This can be done by looking at the animal and pressing E, the pet option can be accessed via the expand the menu. As the player starts to gain more of the animal's trust, whistling will cause it to follow the player. This is useful for leading the animal out of the pen, should the player wish to move them to a different location. To make sure the animal continues to follow the player, keep an eye on the animal follow icon above the animal's head. If it becomes too low, whistle again to get the animals attention.

Caution is advised when leading animals outside the pen. If the animals follow icon falls to zero, the animal will rapidly start to lose trust. Once the trust hits below 80% the player will no longer be able to call the animal. The player can either recapture the animal via the blowpipe or leave it to return to the wild. If the player chooses to release the animal to the wild, it will hang around the players base for a short time before running off.

Animal Care[]

The player will need provide animals with food and water. Each animal will display hunger and hydration stats. If they reach zero percent and are not tended to the animal will die. A Water Trough placed in the animal pen will provide a water source, this will need to be filled regularly. During the wet season the trough will automatically fill with rainwater if it has been placed with a clear line of sight to the sky. Clean, dirty or unsafe water can be placed in the trough.

The Feeding Trough can require a lot of food in order to fill it. It is advised, the player has a suitable source of Plant Cultivation if they wish to keep a large number of animals. One of the easiest and quickest methods of feeding would be to use small leaf piles. These can be harvested from palm leaves or banana leaves. It only takes 10 small leaf piles to fill the feeding trough.

After a short while the animals health will start to return to normal.

In order to breed animals, the player will need a male and female of the same type of animal. They will begin to breed at 95% trust, provided one of them is already at 100% trust. Once a female gives birth, it can become pregnant again within hours. To avoid overbreeding, the player can lead either the male or the pregnant female to another animal pen via the call command.
