Real world equivalent?[]
What real world equivalent is there? Because surely the common land worms don't crawl under people's skin.--87.255.89.160 13:26, 6 February 2021 (UTC)
- This is a really good question. There are a few types of parasitic worms that live under the skin, such as ringworm, tapeworm and hookworm. These get into the body via ingestion. I do believe the hookworm can enter both through ingestion and by penetrating the skin. However these look nothing like what we see in the game.
- Now i'm not 100% sure what type of the worm is in Green Hell, but to me it resembles very closely to botfly larvae. Botfly's lay an egg on the surface of the skin, which quickly hatches from the body's warmth and burrows under the skin. I'm gonna add some of this info to the main page as this is a fantastic question. Miamew3 (talk) 21:41, 6 February 2021 (UTC)
- I've always compared the worms to guinea worm. Got both similarities and differences. While they take longer to break out, they do have the characteristic bumps you see ingame & are removed in the same manner you remove them in GH which is not the case for botfly larvae. They are also contracted via contaminated water, whereas botfly either lay eggs themselves or use other invertebrates as intermediaries - so say using beds doesn't help against botflies but could conceivably help against guinea worm since you don't sleep in mud. Guinea worms are mainly painful, but can also cause fever. One point which does speak against guinea worm is that it is native to Africa, while botfly are native to south America. 178.197.219.243 08:33, 12 March 2024 (UTC)
